NSCC was established pursuant to the NSCC Act 2017 with the mandate to identify the needs of senior citizens and to cater for them. it is the first distinct national corporate body with focus on social inclusion of senior citizens in sustainable development and improvement of the quality of living and wellbeing for self-fulfillment.
NSCC is to identify opportunities for training to enhance capacities of senior citizens to continue to participate in what they value and to initiate, develop, facilite and implement health and social programs as well as enhance work schemes and enterprise for income generation to support independent living.
NSCC`s focus is on strengthening the protection of senior citizens right to dignity, independence, care, security, participation and self-fulfillment.
With 14.9 million older persons living in Nigeria, Nigeria has the largest population of older persons in Africa, 50.2% are male and 49.8% are female. 5.3 million in the urban centers while 9.5 million in the rural areas (NBS NLSS 2019). So far 2.5 million older persons are captured on the national data system for the poor and vulnerable (NADDCO 2022)
Subsequently, the NSCC has developed a comprehensive strategic roadmap on ageing and a national plan of action on ageing.
